I would like to add that for information products, a lot of the time it’s pretty easy to rank for “information product review”. I recently did a review of a popular ebook that is a month long discipline program. I went about it by doing the actual program and documenting everything. At the end of the month I wrote up a 2700 word article summing up the whole experience.

Finding a focal topic isn’t enough. The chances are, it’s been covered to death. The broader the subject, the harder it is to compete for. The emphasis here is on finding your niche within broader subjects. A niche can really help you shine in any form of content marketing. For example, running enthusiasts might hone in on trail-running shoes specifically like the Running Shoes Guru. This site includes hundreds of running shoe reviews, and ‘best of’ pages movie fans might specialize in classic movie re-releases. Likewise, electronics hobbyists could promote something as specific as Electronic Drum Kit Reviews.

There are multiple ways to go about content creation, from products reviews and how-to posts. A year ago, when I ran an ABestWeb contest for the best definition of affiliate marketing, Chris, who ended up winning the first prize, summarized things both eloquently and beautifully. He defined affiliate marketing as “the art of doing a merchant’s marketing better than they can, and profiting from it.” Many successful affiliates (also known as super affiliates) are truly better experts in what they do that most of the merchants that they promote. Consequently, they can market e-tailers’ products/services in such a way that merchants get incremental business, while they themselves make a good living off the per sale commission they get.
